MISS CHOCOZUELA (2018)
Part of the Citizenship series at the Walker Art Center Gallery I in response to Carey Young’s Declared Void II.
Miss Chocozuela was a “pageant”, a circus of transphobia in Venezuelan television, where cis men would dress up like drag queens and trans folk ridiculing them. This work brings up the complexities of immigration while Latinx and Queer, wishing and working towards safety and radical communities while experiencing pressure to assimilate.
What is it like to hold these multiple realities?
